Home advantage key for Magpies

Newcastle’s injury list is growing with each game and they could name only seven substitutes for their midweek Champions League clash at Paris Saint-Germain, with two of those goalkeepers and four under the age of 20.

Boss Eddie Howe did not make a change during the 1-1 draw and he is likely to be calling on the majority of that starting XI to line up for the visit of Manchester United.

While a lot is being asked of the current crop of players, the Magpies are one of the fittest sides in the top flight and they should still be able to put in a solid show at St James’ Park, where they have won their previous five Premier League games.

Howe’s troops have tasted defeat only once on Tyneside in the league – a 2-1 loss to Liverpool – and they have managed to keep four clean sheets in front of their own fans.

Newcastle’s goal lived a charmed life in Paris, with keeper Nick Pope pulling off some outstanding saves, and they may find it difficult to keep out a Red Devils side that are excelling in the final third.

Erik ten Hag’s men have scored three goals in each of their past three away matches across all competitions, while they last failed to hit the back of the net on their travels in a 1-0 defeat at West Ham in May.

St James’ Park has not been a happy hunting ground of late for the Red Devils, who have won only one of their previous four visits there and also lost 3-0 at home to Newcastle when they met in the League Cup at the start of last month.

European excursions may keep things tight

Given that both sides had Champions League away matches in midweek, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they could take a bit of time to get going.

Newcastle have been drawing at half-time in three of their past four home league matches before then going on to pick up all three points against Brentford, Arsenal and Chelsea.

As for the Red Devils, they have been held after the first 45 minutes in two of their previous three top-flight assignments on their travels, while they were also drawing at the break when they lost 2-0 at Newcastle in this fixture last season.

Gordon to continue fine form at St James’ Park

Winger Anthony Gordon has been one of Newcastle’s standout players this season and he has netted five times in the league, already his best-scoring return for a single campaign.

The former Everton star has hit the net in the past three Premier League games at home and he can increase his standing even further with the Toon Army by scoring again tonight.

The other part of this bet builder is for visiting left back Luke Shaw to be booked. The England international has only recently returned from injury but it has not taken him long to be cautioned, as he picked up a yellow at Galatasaray.

Shaw could have a tough evening on Tyneside against Miguel Almiron and could well add to his poor disciplinary record against the Magpies. He has been booked five times against Newcastle in his career. He has only been cautioned more against Aston Villa and Wolves (six each).
