Lovlina Borgohain is an Indian amateur boxer who had clinched the ‘Gold’ medal at the inaugural India Open International Boxing Tournament held in New Delhi in February 2018; and the ‘Silver’ medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament held in Guwahati in May 2019 and the 2018 Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia. She had also secured the ‘Bronze’ medal at the 2018 New Delhi AIBA (Association Internationale de Boxe Amateur) World Boxing Championships, the 2019 Ulan-Ude AIBA World Boxing Championships, the 2017 Ho Chi Minh City Asian Amateur Boxing Championships, the 2021 Dubai Asian Amateur Boxing Championships, the 2017 President’s Cup held in Astana, and the 2018 International Silesian Championship held in Poland. In 2020, for her services to boxing, she had been honored with the prestigious Arjuna Award, the 2nd-highest sporting honor of India, becoming just the 6th sportsperson from the state of Assam to achieve the honor.

  • Inspired by her older twin sisters Licha and Lima, who had competed in kickboxing at the national level, Lovlina too had started her career as a kickboxer. She had later switched to boxing.
  • While she was in high school, The Sports Authority of India had held boxing trials at her institution where she was noticed by renowned boxing coach Padum Boro who took her under his wing and began training her, in 2012.
  • She first came into the spotlight in 2018 when she was selected to represent India in the welterweight boxing category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Gold Coast, Australia. She was defeated by eventual champion Sandy Ryan in the quarter-final. There was a minor controversy when she was selected for this tournament based on the fact that she had not been given any official intimation about her selection and had found out about it via a major media outlet.
  • In March 2020, she had qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, in the welterweight category, with a 5-0 win over Maftunakhon Melieva of Uzbekistan in the 2020 Asia & Oceania Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. This had made her the first woman ever from the Indian state of Assam to qualify for the Olympics.
  • In July 2021, when she had defeated former world champion Chen Nien-chin in the quarter-final of the welterweight division at the 2020 Summer Olympics, she had become just the 3rd Indian boxer to secure an Olympic medal after Vijender Singh (‘Bronze’ medal in 2008) and Mary Kom (‘Bronze’ medal in 2012). She lost her semi-final match and won the ‘Bronze’ medal.
